Three Blue Boats at Dusk

Bevil Templeton-Smith

Molesey Photographic Club

Bevil Templeton-Smith is a self-taught British photographer working in cross-polarised photomicrography. He photographs crystals through a 1970 Leitz Orthoplan research microscope, using polarising filters and hand-built retarders. The colour is optical, produced by birefringence within the crystal itself, and each crystallisation happens once and cannot be repeated. He began in 2021 and two years later was named Fine Art Photographer of the Year at the International Photography Awards, from over 14,000 entries across 120 countries. He has since won Gold at the Budapest and Tokyo International Foto Awards, First Place in Fine Art Abstract at the ND Awards, and Gold in Fine Art Series at the Golden Shot Awards. His work has appeared twice in Aesthetica Magazine, including a twelve-page feature, and is held in private collections across five countries. His first exhibition, Polychromo, was held at Alveston Fine Art in London in 2023.
